TYPOGRAPHIC POSTER SERIES

TYPOGRAPHY 2

Poster Series & Visual System

This poster series project features a cohesive visual system with typography as the focal point, highlighting three global social movements: Black Lives Matter, Chibok’s Bring Back Our Girls, and Mother of Plaza de Mayo, for a faux exhibition at the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center.

INITIAL SKETCHES

The initial phase of this project involved sketching and exploring multiple concept ideas. Through experimentation, I delved into themes of repetition and motion, ultimately settling on the concept of waves and echoing, aiming to evoke the sensation of sound and speaking.

TYPOGRAPHIC FREEPLAY

I explored manipulating type physically using various materials, experimenting with organic methods to achieve unique effects.

CONCEPT

Voices and freedom of expression have been suppressed and silenced by authority figures. Through these times, groups have emerged, led by bravery and loud voices creating an identity for each group. The groups became movements, as they began to be led by powerful chants that demand answers and equal rights. These short phrases can be heard within their protests and rallies as individuals blend into one voice, amplifying their demands for justice.

The three social movements are known for their chants and demonstrates how many voices can become one when united.

TYPOGRAPHY

Gibson Bold

Gibson is an eye-catching, bold typeface that engages the audience and leads them through the poster. It’s simplistic and straightforward, conveying messages through raw emotion rather than decorative ornaments. Gibson and the three social movement share similar characteristics and mirror each other through their strong and effective messaging.

During the typographic freeplay, I used a Xerox scanner to stretch and distort the type of each social movement name by sliding and rotating a strip of paper down the machine while it scanned. After this experimentation, the phrases began mimicking the sound of speech and chanting, words blending together and becoming one.
